Hoho! Jenny's violin teacher asked if I want to be a hired pianist accompaniment for her violin students (part-time of course)... I said yes. Hee! It's not often you would find a job that you really enjoy. What's more, the pay's good... haha!
Have not been maintaining this blog recently. Was in a 'reading' mood recently, so most of my free time was spent reading whatever reading materials that were available within my reach.
There's this interesting site online. It is the original source for movie-cum-book, "Black Hawk Down", accounting true-life experiences of young American soldiers' mission-turn-ugly at Mogadishu, Somalia (a country in Africa), in October 1993:
The soldiers' short mission, supposedly expected to take only about an hour, of capturing several top lieutenants of a Somalian warlord, Mohamed Farrah Aidid, turned out to be a "long and terrible night in a hostile city, fighting for their lives" (quoting from Mark Bowen, writer of original online newspaper series) It left 18 soldiers dead and 73 injured. Somalian toll accounts up to 500 dead.
Background:
Intermittent civil wars have taken place in Somalia since 1977. In 1993, the Americans and United Nations intervened to try to prevent a "growing humanitarian disaster in the increasing lawless country" (wikipedia.org), in an operation called Operation Restore Hope when they realised that insurgent forces led by Mohamed Farrah Aidid are controlling the food rations sent by UN, by force, and this act was leading to widespread famine.
Mark Bowen, I feel, is a really good writer. His articles were very engaging and included interviews with some of the soldiers who took part in the mission, together with assessment of the actual event that took place. Nice site to venture into.
Another reading material keeping me busy is a book titled the Samurai's Daughter. I have not finished it, so I can't comment on it yet. Will do so next time. If I remember... haha!
